History is an interesting thing. We’re always learning new information about the schoolhouse and surrounding area. As documents and photos are uncovered, shared and donated, new threads are added to the tapestry that is McKinley Schoolhouse.
Several years ago, the school received a correspondence from a woman in Georgia who had found a folder belonging to her deceased husband, John Younkins. John’s first wife Margery was the daughter of Dr. and Rilla Bernhardy, owners of the school and surrounding Burnhardy Farm. When Dr. Bernhardy passed in 1974, the school and several acres was deeded to Marge.
In the early 90’s John Younkin decided to sell the property as he lived far away. Understanding the importance of the building and its place
in Chippewa history, John wanted to see the building used and cared for in the best way possible.
John’s folder is a treasure-trove of information about his journey to sell the school. Photos, maps, newspaper articles, and letters tell a story of searching, anticipation, hurry feelings and finally relief at the sale of the school to the newly formed McKinley School Historical Society of Chippewa.
The contents of John’s folder will be on display in the schoolhouse for Chippewa Township Community Day on July 10th from 4:00-7:00pm.
