Springtime is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. By the time this article is printed, the fire department will already be well underway, ramping up our training and activities.
Throughout the winter months we did as much training indoors as we could, keeping our volunteers as healthy as possible by staying out of the elements. We kept our skills sharp by practicing techniques in such things as hose line advancement and rope rescue scenarios.
Most recently, many of our members updated their basic first aid and CPR certifications and participated in our annual Hazmat Operations Refresher. In April, we will be conducting a structure burn class, where new firefighters can experience live fire situations in a locally acquired structure while more experienced firefighters can sharpen their skills, all under the watchful eye of several state instructors that are certified by the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy in Lewistown, Pa. This is some of the best training a volunteer firefighter can acquire as it is the most realistic situation one can get in a controlled environment.
As you get into your spring cleaning we ask that you be mindful of how you dispose of your outdated and unwanted stuff. Please check the Township and County websites as they both schedule hazardous materials collection dates. Remember your burning ordinances. Burning of leaves and other yard waste is prohibited. If you are unfamiliar, you can get a copy of the burning ordinance by contacting the Township offices at 724-843-8177.
If you are looking for a smaller venue to hold a wedding or baby shower or some other special event, consider our social hall. We have recently freshened it up with new paint and a fresh wax and polish on the floors and hope to update the window treatments soon. Our hall holds about 100 people and is a smoke free facility. We have a small kitchen with commercial appliances and a large beverage cooler. For pricing and availability, you can contact our Hall Manager, Don Hagy by calling 724-384-8290.
Lastly, we ask that you be mindful of the hazards that Springtime weather can bring. Rain slicked roads require a heightened awareness while driving. Leaves, branches and other debris can clog gutters and drains, causing flooding situations during spring rain showers. People will be trying to shed their winter doldrums by being more active outdoors. Please be mindful of people out and about, walking their dogs, riding their bikes and exercising. Pedestrian traffic will largely increase with kids and adults alike. On the roads, sunshine and warm temperatures can be distracting. Remain alert behind the wheel and watch for harder to see hazards such as motorcycles and children at play.
The men and women of the Chippewa Township Fire Department look forward to serving you when you need us most.
