When Northwestern Primary School students were combined with the third and fourth grade Blackhawk Intermediate School students in one building, a unique opportunity arose–––––––– Student Mentoring.
At BIS K-4, each third and fourth grade classroom is assigned to a classroom in kindergarten, first or second grade. This is their mentor class. Mentor classes meet on a regular basis to work together on science experiments or art projects. Sometimes the older students read to the younger students or act as listeners while the younger students practice their new reading skills. Occasionally, the two groups meet to share in an OLWEUS lesson. OLWEUS is the district’s adopted anti-bullying program.
The mentor program has allowed the older students to have an opportunity to practice leadership skills. Mrs. Anderson, a third grade teacher says, “My students look forward to working with their Kindergarten buddies! They treasure the mentor class time and feel good helping their new friends.”
The younger students are equally excited to spend time with their mentors. Ms. Shildt, a kindergarten teacher, says “The program has been a huge success. The kindergarteners love it and look up to their fourth grade buddies.”
BIS teachers are always collaborating to come up with new and creative opportunities for the times their classes are together. It is exciting to watch all the wonderful relationships grow from the program.
