Carnegie Mellon University Entertainment Technology Center Visit

Blackhawk High School students were recently invited to participate in a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center. Selected students submitted video applications and those chosen were assigned to groups with the purpose of proposing a solution to a real-world problem.

Students brainstormed solutions and created a process to achieve a product that addressed the topic. Through the process, students have worked closely with liaisons from CMU who have introduced students to available software and collaborative strategies to assist in the creation of the product. Student projects range from an interactive map of food deserts in Beaver County to a virtual reality introduction of Japanese culture and customs.

This partnership has also allowed BHS students the opportunity to visit CMU’s ETC on multiple occasions to view the projects on which current CMU students are working. Although some
of the work for the projects was completed during school time, students have largely been completing the work as an extra-curricular activity. Some of the groups hope to have finalized products by the end of the 2018-2019 school year, while other groups will be finalizing their products in the 2019-2020 school year.

Technology Student Association

Blackhawk School District would like to say how proud we are of our students who participate in the Technology Student Association (TSA). This group of students work all year to create projects that they enter into STEAM related competitions. These projects range from video game design to marketing to essay writing. Students can work individually or in groups. We would like to congratulate the following students who placed at the Pennsylvania Technology Student Association Conference at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort in April.
